University of Miami Researcher Wins Approval for Phelan-McDermid GI Research Study

University of Miami researcher Julia Dallman recently announced that her lab’s work modeling PMS GI symptoms won funding by a Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) pilot grant mechanism.

The grant is for collaboration with a Duke University gut physiology expert, Dr. John Rawls, and is entitled “Gut-intrinsic mechanisms of gastrointestinal dysmotility in animal models of ASD.”

“This research will allow us to pinpoint how reduced Shank3 causes reduced gut motility,” Dallman said. “Successful completion of this work would suggest therapeutic targets for those with PMS.”

SFARI is funding 19 grants in response to the Summer 2020 Pilot Award request for applications (RFA). Pilot Awards support novel, high-risk and exploratory projects that have the potential to yield transformative results in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research.

SFARI intends to provide more than $5.69 million over the next two years to support the 21 investigators leading these projects.
